tug of war
Would you rather swim in a pool or in the ocean?
We showed our thinking by adding our names to this "tug of war".
Then, we asked each other that important question...
"What makes you say that?"
In the end, we learned that it was okay to agree to disagree.
Actually, we agreed that we were glad that we had different ideas.

Good Morning Work
Each morning, after we put away jackets and backpacks, we work on Good Morning Work.
This practice time includes daily oral language, sight word review, basic reading skills and handwriting practice. First graders, also, use this time to practice recently learned math skills.
Parents, be sure to look for these daily practice worksheets, as they will allow you to see the skills we are currently working on.

Read to Someone
We begin each morning right here. After we finish our Morning Meeting, we make our plans for reading. Usually, we start with a mini-lesson. This gives us a chance to take a look at
a mentor text, discuss a strategy that good readers can use or just enjoy a good story. Then, we think about which of our daily literacy activities would help us to reach our reading goals. One of these choices is "Read to Someone". Reading to Someone helps us improve our comprehension and fluency, and it is fun!

Read to Self
We begin everyday with literacy activites that help us to become "strong readers who love to read". We practice each activity until we become independent and then we work to increase our stamina.
Read to Self is the first reading activity we practiced. We've learned to choose "good fit" books, and read each day to improve comprehension.
